At least five people were murdered in a shooting in Raleigh, North Carolina’s capital, officials announced Thursday, adding that a suspect had been captured.

The police department quickly tweeted that the suspect had been arrested. On multiple occasions, mass shootings have shaken the public, reigniting debate about gun regulation, a difficult cultural issue that has made little headway in Congress.

According to the Gun Violence Archive website, over 34,000 people have died as a result of shootings in the United States so far in 2022, with more than half of them committing suicide.

Increasing Shooting Incidents

The shooting in North Carolina happened just hours after a jury had rejected the death penalty for Nikolas Cruz, who shot and killed 17 people at a Florida high school in 2018.

However, other recent gun rampages, most notably those at a Texas school and a Buffalo store popular with African-Americans, stunned the country, prompting lawmakers to agree in June, for the first time in 30 years, to enact modest gun control measures.

According to the Small Arms Survey, around 400 million civilian firearms were in civilian circulation in the United States in 2017, or 120 firearms for every 100 people.

According to sources, the suspect is thought to be a Caucasian teenage male with a long gun. They note that no one has been apprehended yet, but officials have cornered the suspect in a garage.

There were numerous crime scenes associated with the active shooting incident, according to the report. More than a dozen rescue trucks were lined up on a remote road, according to helicopter footage. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said he spoke with Baldwin and that state resources were en route to the area.
