Ravichandran Ashwin and Harshal Patel have been named to India’s 15-man T20 World Cup team in Australia. The pair edged out Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan for the two spots that were up for grabs before the squad was finalized. The team led by Rohit Sharma will be missing ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who recently underwent surgery on his injured right knee, with Axar Patel filling in as a like-for-like substitute.
Both Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, who missed the Asia Cup due to injuries, have been named to the team. India’s lineup is mostly predictable, with only the identity of the fourth seamer and the second frontline spinner remaining to be determined following their withdrawal from the Asia Cup.
While Arshdeep Singh retains his slot and provides a left-arm angle to the attack, Avesh Khan is replaced by Harshal Patel, who yielded an economy of 12 RPO in the two games he played before being ruled out with an illness.
Ravi Bishnoi, who played only one game against Pakistan, will be relegated to the reserves, with India preferring Ashwin’s expertise. Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel are the other two spinning alternatives in the squad. Deepak Hooda retains his spot despite having few opportunities at the Asia Cup. The batting lineup is identical to that of the Asia Cup, with Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik serving as the two wicket-keeper options.
Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar have been named to the sides that will face Australia and South Africa in the run-up to the World Cup. While Shami has not played T20Is since the World Cup last year, Chahar made his international T20I debut against Afghanistan in India’s final Asia Cup game.
The duo will fill in for Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Hardik Pandya, who will go to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for conditioning work at various points during these two home series. While Arshdeep will be absent from the series against Australia, Bhuvneshwar and Hardik will be absent from the following match against South Africa.
