The accused in the Mangaluru autorickshaw blast was “motivated by the ISIS terror group” and used the dark web to contact his handlers, authorities said today, claiming a breakthrough. According to the Karnataka police, Shareeq had numerous handlers, one of them from Al Hind, an ISIS-inspired terror organization. Shareeq, a native of Shivamogga area, was riding in an autorickshaw with an improvised explosive device (IED) in a pressure cooker when it exploded, leaving him with severe burn injuries. He is currently receiving care in a city hospital.

The police called the explosion “an act of terror with the purpose to do catastrophic harm.”. The accused manufactured bombs at home. He even carried out a “trial burst” on the banks of a river, according to the police officer. So far, police have searched five places in Karnataka, including his residence in Mysuru, and recovered components used to construct bombs, he claimed.

The police caught two of his accomplices the next day. But Shareeq escaped and rented a residence in Mysuru using a stolen Aadhaar card. During this time he continued to construct bombs, according to the police.

Another Arrest

A guy was arrested in Coimbatore for purported ties to Shareeq. According to Tamil Nadu police officials, the man lived with Shareeq in a hostel and also gave him his Aadhaar card to obtain a sim card. The Tamil Nadu police department has also initiated an investigation. It started after it was revealed that Shareeq visited many locations in the state days before the explosion. Shareeq traveled from Tamil Nadu to Kerala, where he allegedly received a shipment via Amazon, according to NDTV.

Special teams have been constituted to investigate if he met or had connections with Jameesha Mubin. He is the main suspect in the recent Coimbatore car blast case. After 75 kg of explosive raw materials were seized from the residence of Jameza Mubin, who perished in the incident, the police have invoked parts of the harsh anti-terror law UAPA.

Although the authorities have confirmed that Shareeq and Jameza Mubin were ISIS sympathizers, no link has been established between the two. Shareeq is said to have received 45 percent burn injuries in the autorickshaw blast. Even though he is no longer in danger, authorities say he is not well enough to provide a statement. According to authorities, he was carrying a low-intensity Improvised Explosive Device or IED. Inside the truck, a charred pressure cooker with batteries was discovered.
