In the midst of the continuing unrest in Iran, actress Priyanka Chopra has spoken out in favor of Iranian women protesting the killing of Mahsa Amini. Mahsa Amini was apprehended on September 13 while exiting a Tehran metro station with her brother and other relatives.
She was detained for allegedly violating Iran’s strict standards requiring women to wear hijab headscarves and modest attire. Mahsa remained in a coma for three days before dying from “natural causes,” as the authorities reported, but campaigners believe she died as a result of a lethal blow to the head.
Following the tragedy, hundreds of Iranians have come to the streets in the following two weeks to condemn Mahsa Amini’s death. Women all across the world have chopped or shaved their hair in public or while being videotaped to show solidarity with Iranian women’s plight in marches and demonstrations. Priyanka Chopra, like many other women, has expressed her support on social media.
She posted on Instagram, ” “Women in Iran and throughout the world are rising up and raising their voices in support of Mahsa Amini, whose young life was brutally taken away by the Iranian Morality Police for wearing her hijab ‘inappropriately.’ Voices that speak after years of forced silence will erupt like a volcano! And they will not, and must not, be cut.”
She said, “I admire your bravery and determination. It is difficult to put your life on the line to question the patriarchal establishment and fight for your rights. But you are strong women who do this every day, regardless of the cost to themselves “. Priyanka asked the government and others in positions of authority to listen to the protestors and comprehend their concerns.
“To ensure that this movement has a long-term impact, we must first hear their call, then comprehend the causes and join in with our collective voices. We also need everyone who can persuade others to join. Numbers are important. Join this crucial movement by adding your voice.
Stay informed and vocal so that these voices are no longer silenced. I agree with you. Azaadi, Jin, Jiyan… Women, life, and liberty “, She continued. Elnaaz Norouzi, in addition to Priyanka, has shown her support for Iranian women.
