Danushka Gunathilaka, a Sri Lanka cricketer who was part of the national squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia, was detained on sexual assault accusations, according to team sources on Sunday. Gunathilaka, 31, was detained and escorted to Sydney City police station in the early hours of Sunday after an investigation into an alleged sexual assault on a lady on November 2.
Daushka Gunathilaka was arrested for rape. The Sri Lankan team has departed Australia without him, according to a source close to the team, according to PTI. After losing to England on Sunday, the Sri Lankan team was eliminated from the tournament.
The left-handed hitter was out for a duck in the opening round of the ongoing T20 World Cup against Namibia. He was later ruled out of the tournament due to injury, despite the fact that the team had qualified for the Super 12 stage. The Sri Lankan team came in fourth place in Group 1.
The New South Wales Police Department has also noted the arrest of an unknown Sri Lankan national on its website. According to the newspaper, “Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a Sri Lankan national following an investigation into an alleged sexual assault on a lady in Sydney’s east last week.”
According to the website, a 29-year-old lady was sexually attacked earlier this week at a property near Rose Bay. “The victim met with the man after chatting with him via an online dating app for a number of days; it is alleged he then sexually attacked her on the evening of Wednesday, November 2, 2022.”
“A crime scene examination was conducted yesterday by expert police at an address in Rose Bay as part of continuing investigations.” Following additional investigation, a 31-year-old guy was detained soon before 1 a.m. today (Sunday, November 6, 2022) at a hotel on Sussex Street in Sydney,” the report continued.
Gunathilaka debuted on the international stage in 2015. Since then, the left-handed batsman has appeared for his country in eight test matches, 47 one-day internationals (ODIs), and 46 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Danushka Gunathilaka is a Sri Lankan professional cricketer who bats in the top order in all formats of the game. He also represented Sri Lanka in the 2010 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was picked to Kandy’s team for the 2017-18 Super Four Provincial Tournament in March 2018.
He was picked to Kandy’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament the following month. He was appointed to Dambulla’s 2018 SLC T20 League squad in August 2018. He was picked to Dambulla’s squad for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament in March of 2019.
